Scottish Smallholders Show 2017
Newcomer to Cluns and the show ring Mary Parry celebrated the end of an excellent first season with a 1st Hill Heath and Upland Shearling or older ewe class , Champion Hill, Heath and Upland, and then to top it off won Interbreed at her first attempt with her Honddu bred shearling ewe.
This years Newbury Show again attracted strong Clun entries with some excellent sheep on show at the last big show of the season with 2 partnerships Knowles & Brown and Searle & Vincent sharing the 4 Red Rosettes and 2 Cups on offer. Del & Daryl won the Ram, Ewe lamb and the Phillip Simmons Cup for Best Exhibit; with Rex & Debs winning the Ram Lamb, Ewe and The Lord Porchester Cup for the Best Ewe.
Newbury Show 2017
Cluns dominate A.O.N.B. Section at Felin Fach Show 2017
Two young Clun breeders dominated the Any Other native Breed Section at a sunbaked Felin Fach Show on Bank Holiday Monday, winning 3 of the 4 classes against Suffolks, Llanwenogs and Poll Dorsets Monday. Monty Davies (Aber-Rheon Flock) took the Ram Any Age Class with a very smart 2 shear ram, with Cameron Hendrie (Midlam Flock) taking the ewe and ewe lamb class with 2 equally smart sheep. Monty went on to win the AONB Championship with Cameron a close reserve with the ewe. Monty also recieved the T.R.Eckley Memorial Cup from Robert Eckley formerly of Court-Llacca.
Burwarton Show 2017
Clun Flocks from Oxfordshire, Powys, Wiltshire and Worcestershire attended one of the Uk biggest one day shows at Burwarton last week to do battle. There were 7 red rosettes up for grabs with I.T.Davies & Son winning the Shearling ram class, Aged ewe class and both lamb classes. There was a welcome first appearance in the Clun lines this year from Debs Searle and Rex Vincent and they duly won the Aged Ram class. The Wrotham Flock of Messers Knowles & Brown took the final 2 reds in the Shearling ewe class and the Champion Group Class. The Championship was won by Mr.Davies's Foxglove bred Shearling ram and Messers Searle & Vincent took the reserve with their Sarnesfield bred Aged Ram. There was to be further success in the ewe lamb Interbreed for the Honddu Flock as they won against strong opposition. Thanks must also be given to Cameron Hendrie, John Shepperson and Steph Thackery who made the long journeys from their respective homes.
ROYAL WELSH SHOW 2017
The Royal Welsh Show this week saw 8 exhibitors from all over the UK compete for the most prestigious championship in the show season. The judge for this year show was Nigel Faulkner of the Cerney Flock and was more than up to the task. In the ram class he gave the red to Mike Eckleys powerful three year old ram Sarnesfield 14.01493 aka Ivor the Engine and the blue rosette went to Messers Del Knowles & Daryl Brown's Trewyrlod 15.01705, who has been so successful during the 2017 season. In the shearling ram class Edna, Alan & Phil Spice took honours with a smart tup, Fieldway 16.0232, with the youngest exhibitor, Monty Davies being placed 2nd with a very sharp shearling Aber-Rheon 16.00005. The final male class saw Monty go one better and take first prize with a very 'showy' March born lamb Aber-Rheon 17.00006 and 2nd went to Fieldway 17.00273, who was subsequent sold after the show to a fellow exhibitor.
A strong shearling ewe class left the judge quite literally scratching his head with very little separating the top 3, but it was to be the Spice family who did the double in the shearling class with a very smart homebred ewe Fieldway 16.00259, coming a very close 2nd was Bex Meredith and a strong Menutton bred ewe. It was a welcome return to the Clun classes for the Meredith family who have won the Royal Welsh Championship 4 times previously. The ewe lamb class went to a lengthy and smart ewe lamb from Del and Daryl, Wrotham 17.01837, with the Spice family notching up another 2nd with Fieldway 17.00306. The Wrotham Flock also went on to win the Group Championship. Congratulations to Mary Parry who deservedly who the W.I.Owens Cup for the Best Novice exhibit with her shearling ewe.

Cluns at Nantwich Show 2017
Mandy Glover took sheep from her Maddaveny Flock in Cheshire to her local show at Nantwich. She was placed in all the classes entered and came away with a 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th. Well done Mandy!
Cluns in the Irish show ring for first time in 20 years
It has been 20 years sine Northern Irish Clun breeder, Edward Adamson, has shown Cluns. The well known N.Ireland Regional NSA Development Manager who also keeps Ile de France, Lleyns and Easycare took his two imported Honddu ram lambs and finished 1st & 2nd in the Traditional, Native & Rare Breed class at Antrim Show. He was up against Southdown, Leicester Longwool & Valais Blacknose but also managed to get Reserve Champion and created a lot of interest in our wonderful breed. Well done Edward...keep flying the flag!
Cluns back at the Great Yorkshire Show
It has been over 40 years since there have been Clun classes at the GYS, but that didn't deter Brian & Jen Hunter to enter their show team at this years show and what a show they had competing in the Hill, Heath and Upland Section against Kerries, Devon Closewools, Border Leicesters, Speckled Faced and Portlands. They took 1st in Aged ram class with Trewyrlod 14.07550, 4th in the ram lamb class, 5th in the combined ewe class and 2nd in the ewe lamb class. Trewyrlod 14.07550 then went on to win the Male & Breed Championship. The next day their shearling ewe won the Medium wool section for Wool on the Hoof and came 4th in the Overall Wool on the Hoof Championship.
Kent County Show
The Wrotham Flock had another fantastic show this week and came away with Champion British Down, Reserve Champion Any Other Pure Breed of Native Origin, 5 Firsts and 4 Seconds. The Champion ram was yet again Trewyrlod 15.01750
Royal Norfolk Show
Messers Knowles and Brown once again did the breed proud at a soggy Royal Norfolk Show taking the Any Other Breed Championship against various breeds including Dorsets,Ryelands and Shropshires. It was their 2 year old Trewyrlod 15.01705 - 'Rich' that secured the Championship and on day 2 of the show did one better with their Shearling ewe to win the Pairs Inter-breed Championship beating off the Blue Texels and Teeswater.
Spice Family's South of England Show Success
Edna Spice and her sons Alan and Philip had an enjoyable time at the South of England Show this week being placed in all 4 Any Other Breed classes entered by the Fieldway Flock. In some large classes that included Kerry Hills, Cheviots, Black Welsh Mountain, Jacobs and Herdwicks they acquitted themselves well. They started proceedings but taking a 2nd and 4th in the Ram Class and then going one better in the Ram Lamb Class taking home the red rosette. This was followed by 4ths in both the Shearling Ewe and Ewe Lamb Classes. It was a great achievement for the Spice's who have shown their Cluns regularly for the past 25 years.

Cluns lead the way at Hertfordshire County Show
Hot on the heels of their success at Notts last week the Wrotham Flock did one better at Herts Show and won the Any Other Native Breed Championship with a 2 Shear Clun Ram bred by R.Price, Trewyrlod. They also took 1st and 2nd in the Shearling Ewe Class and were placed 5th in the Ram Lamb Class and 3rd in the Ewe lamb class in very strong classes that contained over 10 other breeds.
On the Sunday the team were out again at the show this time in the Longwool, Down & Shortwool Breeds Open Classes and were to be judged by a familiar face to Clun and Oxford Breeders, Rex Vincent. It was to be another successful day against strong opposition with the Ram winning his class then taking the Shortwool Championship and the Reserve Longwool, Down & Shortwool Breeds Championship. They also got a 5th with the Shearling Ewe and a 3rd with the Ewe Lamb. Again well done guys.

Wrotham Flock success at Notts County Show
Congratulations to Del and Daryl on their success at Notts Show in the Any Other Native Breed Class. They won the Shearling Ewe Class of 18 entries (including Southdowns, Oxfords, Suffolks , Wensleydales) with a homebred Clun Ewe and then the Reserve Female Championship. The also came 4th with their Clun Shearling Ram in a class of 12. Well done guys.
