2022 Sale Report

97th Clun Forest Sheep Society Show & Sale - Ludlow 2022

Clun Forest Sheep Breeders’ Annual Sale at McCartneys Ludlow 2022

I.T. Davies & Son led the field at the 133rd Annual Show and Sale of Clun Forest Sheep, held at McCartneys Ludlow on Friday 9th September, taking the male Championship with their Charben sired ram lamb – Honddu Frank Bruno. The male classes were judged by Mr David Beech and his Champion went on to sell for 400gns to Mrs E Spice and sons and their Surrey based Fieldway flock. The Honddu flock also had a successful day in the female ring breaking the female record price twice, first with their Shearling ewe and followed swiftly by selling their Ewe lamb for £345 to R & B Vernon.

Highest price of the day was found, as typical, in the Shearling ram section with Richard and Celia Prices’ Trewyrlod Excel sired by the well thought of Pen-y-wern Blockbuster selling for 1260gns and headed up to North Yorkshire to join the Nipna Flock of Anna Pennell. Richard and Celia also fielded the winner of the Shearling Ram class and reserve overall Male championship with Trewyrlod Empire, this time sired by a Walton ram. “Empire” made the second highest price of the day of 1060gns also returning to North Yorkshire but this time the flock of Clun Forest Society Chairman Derek Knowles and his Wrotham flock.

In the female rings, Claire Burrough had the job of overseeing the pens and her tricolour was awarded to G R Roberts Pen of 5 2 year old Shearling ewes and these went onto sell for 255gns to Phillips Farms, lifting another record for highest price for pens of 2 year old ewes.

Strong ewes met a competitive ringside of purchasers with gimmer lambs averaging just shy of 200gns and the best over 300gns and tup lambs averaging 310gns topping out at 400gns
