Centenary Show & Sale - Ludlow 2025
Judge Gwawr Williams with the Champion (Lot 15 - Right) held by Paul Murray and Reserve Champion (Lot 26 - Left) held by Geraint Davies.
Despite Bluetongue restrictions affecting the number of both entries and buyers at this year’s annual show and sale, there were still quality lots on offer which caught the attention of bidders to see a new female breed record price set not once, but twice!
In the pre-sale show, under the expert eye of Lewis Beddie of the notable Easter Beltie flock, it was a shearling ram ‘Pen-y-Wern Harry’ (lot 43) from the Pen-y-Wern flock of A.E. Williams and Son which took the male championship. Harry was sired by Walton Fox and out of a Honddu sired dam and went on to achieve the top price of the day selling to David Beech of the Ormerley flock for 1700gns.
Reserve male was an aged ram ‘Pen-y-Wern Govenor’ (lot 64) from the Honddu Daw flock of I.T. Davies & Son. ‘Govenor’, who was bred by A.E. Williams and Son, was sired by Aber-Rheon Darcy out of a Menutton sired dam and sold to Claire Burrough of the Burroway flock for 720gns.
In the ram lamb class, it was a strong stylish lamb ‘Honddu Jaykay’ (lot 60) again from I.T. Davies and Son which took the 1st prize. ‘Jakay’ was sired by Windsor Gruffalo out of a Honddu sired dam and went on to sell for 420gns to Craig Phillips of the Buryfields flock.
Generously donated by L E Lloyd and Sons of the Sarnesfield flock was a strong stylish shearling ram ‘Sarnesfield Hugo’ (lot 52) to be sold with the funds from the sale donated to the British Heart Foundation. The ram saw enthusiastic bidding with it being knocked down twice; initially sold to Mike Eckely of the Court Llacca flock for 400gns who generously put it back in the ring to be resold with it selling to A Spice of the Fieldway flock for 480gns. Huge thanks to L.E. Lloyd and Sons for their generosity.
Judging the female entries was Gwawr Williams of the Eryri flock based in North Wales who found her female champion in a shearling ewe, ‘Inside Hype Honey’ (lot 15) from Paul & Lydia Murray’s Inside Hype flock. Honey was sired by the 2024 Ram of the Year, Honddu Gilbert, out of a Sarnesfield sired ewe and has been shown extensively over the summer with huge success including being part of the National Show Interbreed Group of Three at Burwarton Show and one half of the Cartmel Show Interbreed Pairs Champion. She was much sought after and after keen bidding was knocked down to David Beech of the Ormerley flock for 600gns which set a new breed record for females.
Gwawr’s reserve champion female was sharp and impressive ewe lamb ‘Honddu 11530’ (lot 26) from I.T. Davies & Son which was sired by Windsor Gruffalo out of a Charben sired ewe. Having taken 1st prize at the Royal Welsh Show and been unbeaten on all three occasions the ewe lamb competed in shows over the summer it was highly sought after by bidders and sold once again to David Beech of the Ormerley flock for 500gns. I.T. Davies & Son very generously donated the funds from the sale of the ewe lamb to be split between the Air Ambulance and Prostate Cancer Charities which McCartneys then matched raising a total of 1000gns to be split between the two charities. Huge thanks to I.T. Davies & Son for their generosity.
In the aged ewe class, it was a another lot from Paul & Lydia Murray’s Inside Hype flock, Inside Hype 01364 (Lot 18) which took the first prize and went on to sell outside the ring for 220gns to C Gray.
The female breed record price was set a second time at the sale, this time with lot 25, a ewe lamb from I.T. Davies & Son, which sold for 600gns to Paul & Lydia Murray who earlier in the sale set the female breed record selling their shearling ewe (Lot 15).
Champion pen of females went to Lot 16, a pen of 5 aged ewes with Walton, Trewyrlod and Stormer Cottage bloodlines from G R Roberts & Son of the Furlongs flock which sold for 235gns per head, once again to David Beech of the Ormerley flock.
