CLUNS PEAK AT £1200 AT ANNUAL SALE
It was with great anticipation that Clun Forest Sheep Breeders from all over the UK travelled to the Annual Show and sale at McCartneys Ludlow Market this week. It was the first time that the Ewe and ram sale had been combined to cater for all members and allow just one trip to Shropshire in order to buy new breeding stock. They were not to be disappointed with the best sale in years that included the first thousand pound ram for 25 years and a 95% clearance of all stock entered.

There was an excellent standard on show and that was reflected in the prices with the top price of the day peaking at £1200 for a shearling ram from L.E.Lloyd, Sarnesfield Flock, Herefordshire, who was second in his class and winner of the Novice class. The ram, Sarnesfield 1058, had great size and shape and was purchased by a new breeder Kathleen Davies from Hungerford, Berkshire for her Foxglove Flock.
The rams were judged by Mr. Mike Eckley from the Court-Llacca Flock, Talgarth who gave the Overall Championship to a Shearling ram, Pen-Y-Wern 02169 from Roger Williams, Newcastle-on-Clun. Mr Eckley stated that, ‘the champion had an exceptional back end a was a great advert for the breed’. This ram reached the second highest price of the day £777 and was sold to L.E.Lloyd, Sarnesfield. Other notable prices were for the 1st Prize aged ram and Reserve Champion from Clive Meredith, Hoarwithy, Herefordshie which sold to Del Knowles from Wrotham, Kent for £672.
In the female section the trade was very firm with a top price paid for a pair of shearling ewes, that included the 1st Prize Single ewe, from the Travelly Flock of Brian & Dunja Roberts, Cwmdu, Brecon. The went for £212 each and found a home with another new breeder, Gary Phillips, Whitland, Dyfed. Mr Phillips said, “ I bought a few in lamb ewes from the Court-Llacca Flock last winter as I wanted a ewe that would look after herself and finish the lambs off grass. The clun is ideal for that so I’ve decided to start up my own flock.” Judging the females was Del Knowles who had travelled from Wrotham in Kent.

The Court-Llacca Flock was first exhibited at the Royal Welsh Show at Abergele in 1936. This year it was their 10th Clun Breed Championship after returning to the Royal Welsh Show after a 10 year break.

The break must only have been to give other breeders a chance to win as the Eckley's flock effectively cleared the decks winning the breed championship with a shearling ewe and the aged ram and reserve male championship classes with Burrington 10-47.

The grand finale saw Court-Llacca win the Clun group championship with the ram, shearling ewe and ewe lamb. Our congratulations go to an outstanding achievement for Court-Llacca and the Eckleys.
