Clun Forest Sheep Breeders’ Annual Sale at McCartneys Ludlow 2022
I.T. Davies & Son led the field at the 133rd Annual Show and Sale of Clun Forest Sheep, held at McCartneys Ludlow on Friday 9th September, taking the male Championship with their Charben sired ram lamb – Honddu Frank Bruno. The male classes were judged by Mr David Beech and his Champion went on to sell for 400gns to Mrs E Spice and sons and their Surrey based Fieldway flock. The Honddu flock also had a successful day in the female ring breaking the female record price twice, first with their Shearling ewe and followed swiftly by selling their Ewe lamb for £345 to R & B Vernon. Highest price of the day was found, as typical, in the Shearling ram section with Richard and Celia Prices’ Trewyrlod Excel sired by the well thought of Pen-y-wern Blockbuster selling for 1260gns and headed up to North Yorkshire to join the Nipna Flock of Anna Pennell. Richard and Celia also fielded the winner of the Shearling Ram class and reserve overall Male championship with Trewyrlod Empire, this time sired by a Walton ram. “Empire” made the second highest price of the day of 1060gns also returning to North Yorkshire but this time the flock of Clun Forest Society Chairman Derek Knowles and his Wrotham flock. In the female rings, Claire Burrough had the job of overseeing the pens and her tricolour was awarded to G R Roberts Pen of 5 2 year old Shearling ewes and these went onto sell for 255gns to Phillips Farms, lifting another record for highest price for pens of 2 year old ewes. Strong ewes met a competitive ringside of purchasers with gimmer lambs averaging just shy of 200gns and the best over 300gns and tup lambs averaging 310gns topping out at 400gns

It is so good to see the Clun Forest being represented all over the country; in the last fortnight we've seen; Mike Eckley take Champion at Burwarton in the Clun Forest Classes, well done to all the competitors who represented the breed including the brilliant young (and more senior!) handlers from the Beech family and to Kira Newey winning the ewe class In the West Country, the Burrough mother and daughter team continued their triumphant run with their homebred ram lamb taking champion in the AOB section at Honiton following their Interbreed success at North Devon a few days prior Meanwhile in the North, another mother/daughter team in Sue Tyson and Rach Elizzabeth took reserve champion lowland at Garstang Show with their Aged ewe whilst Paul Murray took reserve champion at Cockermouth Show with his aged ram. Finally Andrew Fisher triumphed at Aldborough and Boroughbride taking the AOB section and the overall Interbreed with his shearling ewe! If we've missed you off please let us know, there are so many great people out showing their brilliant Clun Forest Sheep we can't keep up but we would love to shout about it! ps we can't get enough good photos so please send those across too Entries close for the CFS Sale to be held at Ludlow on Friday 9th September THIS Friday 5th August.

As July comes to a close although it’s not quite over so hopefully more to add, it’s good to reflect what a phenomenal few weeks it has been for the Clun Forest Sheep at the shows. They have featured in Interbreed line-ups show after show and credit must go to those members who are out there across the country getting the breed seen. This weeks Farmers Guardian sees both Mike Eckley Reserve Lowland interbreed champion at the Royal Welsh and Anna Pennells’ Reserve supreme at the Great Yorkshire in the press. These two are just the tip of the iceberg with Interbreed success (Ch or res etc) this year so far at Mid Devon Aldborough and Boroughbridge Royal Welsh Great Yorkshire Show Penrith Royal Norfolk Show Royal Bath & West Royal Three Counties North Somerset We are sure there are more to come but it just goes to show the Clun Forest Sheep can compete on all levels against all breeds - smart and stylish At a sun baked Llanelwedd the temperature was set to get even higher with some of the best Clun sheep in the land going head to head. With the classes filed with the best quality sheep for many years, that included animals that had won Interbreed honours at the Royal Three Counties, Royal Norfolk and Great Yorkshire Shows in 2022. So the Judge, Jean Ritchie formally of the Parkstock Flock was well qualified to adjudicate with 20 Royal Welsh Clun Championships to her name.
The Aged Ram Class was won by Mike Eckley with his powerful 3 Shear Ram , Aber-Rheon Charlie, who was bred by Monty Davies and had won the Ram Lamb Class at the last Royal Welsh in 2019. The Shearling Ram Class was taken by Anna Pennell & Nipna Earl, who is out of the legendary Wrotham Sharon, the only Clun to win the Supreme at the Royal Welsh back in 2018. The Ram Lamb Class was won by a typically smart lamb from I.T.Davies, who also won the Group of 3 class. In the Female Section it was a very strong 4 shear ewe from Anna Pennell with a very smart Aber-Rheon bred 2 shear ewe from Gwawr Llewelyn Hughes a close second. The Shearling ewe Class was incredibly strong with Andrew Fishers winner from the Great Norfolk taking the red again followed closely by Mike Eckley with Court-Llacca Edna second. Again the ewe lamb class oozed quality with 2 new breeders leading the class. the First Prize went to a lovely lamb from Richard Whitticase of Churchstoke with a respectable second going to Gwawr Llewelyn Hughes of Caernafon. The Male Championship was eventually taken by Mike Eckley and Charlie with the judge describing him as very correct and great breed type, with Nipna Earl and Anna Pennell taking the reserve slot. The Anna also took the Female Championship with her aged ewe repeating her Great Yorkshire success from the previous week; with Andrew Fishers powerful Shearling ewe taking the reserve place. Mrs Ritchie then awarded the Overall Championship to Mike Eckley's ram and the Reserve to Anna Pennells ewe. The following day saw Mike Eckley repeating his 2016 success by taking the coveted Reserve Native Lowland Interbreed Sash coming behind the eventually Supreme Show Champion. The last day saw Messers Eckley & Pennell being shortlisted from the 42 breeds forward for the Interbreed Pairs but there was no ticket this time. More fantastic success for the Clun Forest at shows all over the country, this time Andrew Fisher with his Nidderdale Flock took both the Overall Champion and Reserve in the Any other Down section at Royal Norfolk Show on the 29th June. He then went on to take the Interbreed Pairs Supreme Championship - congratulations!
