Clun Mules

THE CLUN MULE

Picture
Many say they are the best Mules you can have, producing profitable lambs for many years.

Clun Mules are outstanding commercial ewes for the production of butchers lambs and has been with us since the mid 1970’s.

Clun Mules are also known as English Mules.  They are a cross between a Bluefaced Leicester ram and a Clun Forest ewe, combining the mothering ability, disease resistance and longevity of the Clun Forest sheep with the prolificacy, milkiness and fleece quality of the Bluefaced Leicester.

Clun mule ewes grow to about 70-75 kgs.  They are fast growing and are able to breed in their first year if required.

They cross well with a terminal sire and usually have trouble free pregnancies, with a prolificacy of around 200%.  When lambing they are a joy because they rarely need intervention from the shepherd, they have a strong mothering instinct and they produce plenty of milk so their lambs thrive.

Newborn Clun mule lambs have plenty of vigour to get to their feet and suckle and need minimum shepherding Their vigorous nature remains with them for life.

The wool they produce is much favoured by hand spinners.  It is fine and demi-lustrous with a staple length of 10-12 cms.

Here is a typical set of stats for a group of Clun Mules Ewes & hogs over a 3 year period*:
Year 1
44 ewes reared 78 lambs 177%
71 hoggs    reared 72 lambs 101%

Year 2
63 ewes reared 119 lambs 188%
81 hoggs reared 89 lambs 109%

Year 3
65 ewes reared 122 lambs 192%
75 hoggs reared 80 lambs 106%

So why not give the Clun Mule a try!
