Clun Ram on Ewe lambs

CHOOSE A CLUN RAM ON YOUR EWE LAMBS

Picture
Mating ewe lambs can be a tricky business you need a ram big enough to serve and mature enough get them in lamb.

You’ll need that lamb to be born safely with the minimum intervention and the lamb to be up on it’s feet and suckling a potentially reluctant new mum!

The birth weight needs to be just right and the shape of the head and shoulders need to compliment the smaller pelvis of a growing ewe lamb.

Well it’s no secret that a Clun Forest Ram ticks all those boxes!!  The Clun will give you a moderate birth weight with neat head and legs and are easily born either inside or outside.  This means the lamb and 'new mum' bond is not interfered with and means the best chance for the ewe lamb to become a successful mother.

There has been an increased trend to go back to this native breed, whose virtues are many, but stand out as easy to lamb.  Especially on continental or suffolk cross ewe lambs, which have large heads and shoulders.

You don’t need reams of facts and figures to tell you that a Clun Ram will serve your ewe lambs and give them  live healthy lambs and you a healthy profit.

Tips on the Mating Management of Ewe lambs
Ewe lambs should be mated separately from mature ewes as their oestrus behaviour is less aggressive.

Vasectomised (teaser) rams running with ewe lambs for 15 or 30 days immediately before introducing your Clun ram, can successfully synchronise their heat.

Then mixing a Clun ram with the ewe lambs for just three weeks should result in most the females being served at least once.

Lambing is therefore also focused within this defined period and can be easier to manage.
