Burwarton Show 2024
The annual show of Clun Forest Sheep at Burwarton Show was held on Thursday 1st August. Judged by Mr R Price, he found his champion in young exhibitor Emily Johns' homebred Ewe lamb whilst reserve came from the Breeding ewe class belonging to Richard Witticase. There were 7 exhibitors forward and a nice show of sheep. Congratulations to all. The full results are as follows;

Royal Welsh Show 2024

The annual agricultural pilgrimage to Powys and the Royal Welsh Show took place this week 7 clun exhibitors providing excellent quality stock to showcase the breed to the world. The classes were judged by Mr R Williams (Pen-y-wern). The Clun Section Champions of the the Three Counties and Great Yorkshire were there and the competition in the Shearling and Aged ewe classes was exceptionally strong. The Breed Championship had a new trophy in the form of the magnificent 'Easter Beltie Trophy' which was given by Lewis Beddie. The Aged Ram Class was small in number but big in stature with 3 giant rams forward, but it was Caereinion Earl from Mike Eckley which took the red ticket switching places with last years Male Champion Sarnesfield Evoke from I.T.Davies in to second place. The Shearling Ram Class had 4 strong smart rams forward with Paul & Lydia Murray taking topspot with Honddu Gilbert. The ram Lamb Class was won by a typically smart Honddu ram lamb and the also won the ewe lamb class, group and the new Laidlaw cup for the Best Pair from one exhibitor. It was lovely to welcome Mr & Mrs Laidlaw to the show to present their new trophy

The Female Championship was a 1,2 for Anna Pennell with the shearling ewe getting the nod above the aged ewe and Nipna Flocks third RWAS Female championship in the last 5 shows. The Supreme Championship was contested by the respective champions, but it was Mike Eckley and Caereinion Earl, who took the top honours and the Court-Llacca Flocks sixth Breed Championship in the last 9 shows with Nipna Georgie a strong runner up.

Three Counties Show 2024
There were only 3 exhibitors at this years show, but there was some real quality on show with proud North Walian, Gwawr Williams dominating proceedings winning Breed, Male & Female Championships with homebred shearling sheep Gizmo and Gloria. The Shearling led the way and later that day took the Reserve Interbreed Championship which was a fantastic achievement for Gwawr and the breed.

Devon County, Royal Cornwall and Royal Bath & West Shows
The Burroway Flock continued where it left off last season winning several awards in AOB classes. At Devon County, ewe reserve champion female, aged ram champion male and reserve breed champion. Bath & West, ram lamb reserve champion male, ewe champion female and reserve breed champion, reserve native interbreed group of 3. Royal Cornwall, ram champion male, ewe champion female, breed champion ewe reserve breed champion ram. 3rd overall interbreed pairs and 3rd overall interbreed ram lamb with homebred lamb Burroway Hercules
Shropshire County Show 2024
Mike Eckley and His Court-Llacca Flock won all classes entered at the Shrewsbury based show and took home firsts in the AONB Section. Senior Ram class was won by Caereinion Earl, who was also Male and section Champion. Aged Ewe, Court-Llacca Edna added another and also the Female and Reserve Section Championship. With her ram lamb , Hank winning the Ram lamb Class.
Staffordshire County Show 2024
Anna Pennell's Yorkshire based Nipna Flock started the season with a bang at the Staffordshire County Show when her homebred Shearling Ewe, Nipna Georgie, took the AOB Hill & Heath Section amongst strong competition. Her senior ram Trewyrlod Excel took the Reserve slot after winning a large Aged/Shearling ram class. Nipna Georgie went on to finish second Reserve in the overall Interbreed Championship.
RWAS Smallholders 2024
The Eryri Flock of Gwawr Williams made the trip to Llanelwedd with a team of Cluns and Black Welsh Mountain Sheep and took top honours in both. Her Cluns were in the AONB Lowland Section against Suffolks, Poll Dorset, Oxfords, Hamps, Coloured Downs, Border Leicesters and Cluns. The classes were very large and her homebred Shearling ram Eryri Gizmo took second. She went one better when last years Female of the Year Aber-Rheon bred ewe took first. She then took first and second in a huge shearling ewe class. The aged ewe won the Championship with her homebred Shearling ewe Eryri Gloria Reserve. Finally she won the Group Championship.
Burroway Flock wins the Court-Llacca Cup for Second Year
Mother and Daughter team Claire & Chloe Burrough produced a string of fantastic success at numerous 2023 shows in the south west this summer that secured the Court-Llacca Cup for the Exhibitor of the Year (AOB Sections) for the second year in a row. They also won several Interbreed honours including the Royal Bath & West Show at Shepton Mallett.
New Breeders wins at Dalston, Ennerdale, Masham, Skelton, Westmorland Shows
Paul and Lydia Murray took loads of prizes this season with a variety of sheep and finished Runner up for the Court-Llacca Cup for the Exhibitor of the Year Cup.
FELIN FACH SHOW 2023
The Court-Llacca Flock dominated the AONB section winning all 4 classes. The Championship went to Mike Eckley's shearling ram Aber-Rheon Fernando with his aged ewe Court-Llacca Edna taking the Reserve stop. The 2 then combined to form a formidible team in the interbreed pairs and duly took the Pairs Interbreed Championship. Fernando then went on to win the Reserve Interbreed Lowland Championship.
Derwent Flock success at Gosforth, Keswick, Penrith & Westmorland Shows
Rach & Sue's Derwent Flock had lots of success this autumn and the star of the show was their Wollerton bred stock ram 'Big Kev' who was at the top at several shows.

Royal Welsh 2023
What a tremendous display of Clun Forest Sheep there was at the 2023 Royal Welsh Show. It was lovely to welcome more new exhibitors join the ranks at the show and the classes growing. The Clun Forest classes were held at midday on Tuesday 25th July and judged by Mr Lewis Beddie who had made the journey down from Scotland to adjudicate.
He found his champion in Gwawr Llewelyn Hughes homebred Shearling Ewe "Eryri Fancy" - sired by a Hayton ram out of a Aber-Rheon Ewe. She won a 12 strong shearling ewe class before going on to take both the Female and then Overall Breed Champion.
It was even more pleasing that the Champion went on to stand Overall Reserve Lowland Champion in the Interbreed championship judged on the Thursday of the show.
Male Champion and Reserve Breed champion fell to I T Davies & Son 2 shear Sarnesfield bred ram. Purchased from the society sale in the Autumn of 2022, this upstanding ram took the Overall Championship at Royal Three Counties earlier in the year before coming onto victory at the Royal Welsh. The I T Davies flock also took home reserve female Champion with their homebred Hondu ewe lamb.
Reserve Male Champion was from the long-standing Court-Llacca flock of M Eckley and his smart homebred shearling Ram Aber-Rheon Fernando.
The CFSBS was also delighted to unveil their brand-new Society stand - designed and supplied by Agri Marketing, it is hoped this stand will take the society forward and allow a good precense at many events in the future.

Clun veteran breeder, Mike Eckley, ventured to the home county of the Cluns at the Shropshire County Show in Shrewsbury in the Any Other Pure Breed Class which contains a strong entry of continental breeds. The Court-Llacca Flock took home the Reserve Male Championship with 2 Shear tup, Caereinion Earl and the Reserve Female Championship with a homebred Shearling Ewe Cour-Llacca Florence.
Otley Show 2023
Another show regular, Anna Pennell, made her first appearance of the year at Otley Show and walked away with the AOB Championship with a homebred Shearling Ewe.
Kenilworth Show 2023
One of the newest and youngest members is Maisie Smith and she did herself proud taking home a first Prize with her aged ewe Aber-Rheon Betty and 3rd with her Sarnesfield Aged Ram in very strong classes of 15 and 16 entries.
Newark & Staffordshire Shows 2023
Andrew Fisher has also had a good start to the season with Championships with his Cluns at both Newark and Staffordshire Shows. Pictured is his ewe from Staffs.
North Somerset & Devon County Shows 2023
Claire & Chloe Burrough have started off the 2023 show season with a bang taking prizes galore. Firstly at the North Somerset Show where their homebred shearling ewe won the Hill & Heath Championship before then taking the Interbreed Native Championship. They also won the Interbreed Group Championship. Then later in May at the Devon Show they won 3 firsts, Male Champion and Reserver Interbreed Group Championship.
Kington Show 2022
Kington Show is one of the last major one day shows in the Uk and the last remaining agricultural show in Herefordshire. This summer it was baking hot and the cluns found themselves in the AONB Section with large entries and strong competition. But as with so many shows this summer the Cluns on top. This time it was Mike Eckley winning 3 of the 4 classes and taking the Championship with Aber-Rheon Charlie who remained unbeaten for the year. There was the added bonus of a Clun Trophy that was first presented in 1962 by C.L.Coxon, being presented for the best Clun. The Cup was last given in 2007 when there were last separate Clun classes and has been in storage for 15 years. The Cup will now be presented annually for the Best Clun in the AONB Section. Mike said, "It was a lovely gesture and hopefully with so many new breeders there will be more Cluns exhibited next year." He added my grandfather Tom won the same Cup in 1963 and I still have the Rosette and Prize Card so its a special moment.
Penistone Show 2022
The Ormerley Flock of David Beech took Champion and Reserve Lowland at Penistone show today with their Cluns. With the shearling ewe taking Champion and the Aged Ram Reserve and the shearling ewe going on to win Reserve Interbreed
Lowick Show 2022
New Clun breeders Helen Irving and her Grandson Alfie, made their first forey into the showing with their Doe View Cluns at Lowick Show, Cumbria. They were not disappointed taking home the Championship. They followed this up with Westmorland Show where they took another red and the Reserve Breed Championship
Felin Fach Show 2022
The good news for the Clun Forest breed continues this Bank Holiday weekend with Mike Eckley and family competing at the Felin Fach Show at Court-Lllacca where the flock once came from. Mike took the Any Other Native Breed championship followed by Reserve Interbreed with his homebred Shearling Ewe - just brilliant!
Melplash 2022
The Burroway mother and daughter team had a great end to their 2022 Show season with their Shearling Ewe taking the Overall Interbreed at Melplash Agricultural Show as we all also the Interbreed Group of three - Congratulations!
Ashover Show 2022
It was a really good day with the cluns at Ashover show for Ormerley Livestock. Winning Rare Breed Champion with a home bred shearling ewe then going on to win the interbreed supreme sheep champion.
Ipstones Show 2022
Congratulations to David Beech and team who had a very successful Ipstones Show. Their Aged Ram taking the Lowland Championship and Overall Male Interbreed Championship. They also took the Group of 3 Interbreed Championship against great competition.

Burwarton Show 2022
Burwarton Shows boasts one of the strongest livestock sections in any one day show and on its post covid return it did not disappoint. The Cluns were well represented by breeders with Messers Beech, Newey & Eckley attending. It was a good day for the Court-Llacca Flock winning several firsts and taking the Championship with Senior Tup Aber-Rheon Charlie and the Reserve with homebred Shearling ewe Court-Llacca Edna. The Aged ewe Class was won by Kira Newey. There was to be further Interbreed success with Charlie placed 3rd in the Supreme Championship and Court-LLacca Florence taking the Reserve Interbreed Ewe Lamb Championship
North Devon Show 2022
The Burroway Flock continued their impressive run of AOB Championships at the North Devon Show this week and once again they were in the mix in the Interbreed Championships. This time it was a homebred Shearling ewe Burroway Laurel who took the Reserve Supreme Interbreed Championship for the Mother & Daughter team of Claire & Chloe Burrough.
Royal Welsh Show 2022
At a sun baked Llanelwedd the temperature was set to get even higher with some of the best Clun sheep in the land going head to head. With the classes filed with the best quality sheep for many years, that included animals that had won Interbreed honours at the Royal Three Counties, Royal Norfolk and Great Yorkshire Shows in 2022. So the Judge, Jean Ritchie formally of the Parkstock Flock was well qualified to adjudicate with 20 Royal Welsh Clun Championships to her name.
The Aged Ram Class was won by Mike Eckley with his powerful 3 Shear Ram , Aber-Rheon Charlie, who was bred by Monty Davies and had won the Ram Lamb Class at the last Royal Welsh in 2019. The Shearling Ram Class was taken by Nipna Earl, who is out of the legendary Wrotham Sharon, the only Clun to win the Supreme at the Royal Welsh back in 2018. The Ram Lamb Class was won by a typically smart lamb from I.T.Davies, who also won the Group of 3 class. In the Female Section it was a very strong 4 shear ewe from Anna Pennell with a very smart Aber-Rheon bred 2 shear ewe from Gwawr Llewelyn Hughes a close second. The Shearling ewe Class was incredibly strong with Andrew Fishers winner from the Royal Norfolk taking the red again followed closely by Mike Eckley with Court-Llacca Edna second. Again the ewe lamb class oozed quality with 2 new breeders leading the class. the First Prize went to a lovely lamb from Richard Whitticase of Churchstoke with a respectable second going to Gwawr Llewelyn Hughes of Caernafon.
The Male Championship was eventually taken by Mike Eckley and Charlie with the judge describing him as very correct and great breed type, with Nipna Earl and Anna Pennell taking the reserve slot. The Anna also took the Female Championship with her aged ewe repeating her Great Yorkshire success from the previous week; with Andrew Fishers powerful Shearling ewe taking the reserve place. Mrs Ritchie then awarded the Overall Championship to Mike Eckley's ram and the Reserve to Anna Pennells reserve Male. .
The following day saw Mike Eckley repeating his 2016 success by taking the coveted Reserve Native Lowland Interbreed Sash coming behind the eventually Supreme Show Champion. The last day saw Messers Eckley & Pennell being shortlisted from the 42 breeds forward for the Interbreed Pairs but there was no ticket this time.

A great end to a big week for clun forest sheep with news from mid Devon tonight of Claire and Chloe Burroughs burroway flock taking the Interbreed Sheep Title with there shearling ewe. Well done ladies
Penrith Show 2022
Great news from new breeders Paul and Lydia Murray who have been showing their Cluns for the first time today at Penrith show.
They won all five of their classes in the Any Other section with their homebred shearling ewe taking the championship and ewe lamb reserve.
Proving yet again Cluns stand out in Interbreed they went on to take Overall Reserve Champion in the Interbreed

There were 4 exhibitor showing in the Clun Forest Breed classes at this years Great Yorkshire Show. Judged by Mr Richard Price, he found his Breed Champion in Anna Pennells’ homebred Shearling Ram “Nipna Earl”. Reserve was found in Andrew Fishers homebred Shearling Ewe
“Nipna Earl” then went on to take the Interbreed Championship for the non-mv sheep before standing Reserve Supreme Sheep of the show.
Anna Pennells winning pair - the same Shearling ram alongside her 4 shear ewe - also went on to stand reserve non-mv Interbreed pairs champion as well as taking third place in the group of three championship when joined by a homebred shearling ewe.

More fantastic success for the Clun Forest at shows all over the country, this time Andrew Fisher with his Nidderdale Flock took both the Overall Champion and Reserve in the Any other Down section at Royal Norfolk Show on the 29th June. He then went on to take the Interbreed Pairs Supreme Championship - congratulations!
Cumberland Show 2022
Rach Willan and Sue Tyson of the Derwent Flock have had a great start to their 2022 season with their Clun Forest Team at Cumberland Show, held near Carlisle. Competing in the Any Other Native section they took the Overall Reserve Champion with their Shearling Ram as well as several other accolades! Congratulations!

Royal Three Counties Show 2022
The Three Counties Show returned in glorious June sunshine and along with it were the oldest Clun Classes in the UK. There were 4 exhibitors and each one took home a red rosette. The Aged Ram and Ram Lamb Class were won by the Meredith Family who have recently cut back on their sheep due to ill health in the family. The Shearling ram and Aged Ewe Class was won by Anna Pennell. The Shearling Ewe Class was won by Andrew Fisher and the Ewe Lamb Class was won by Faye Hendrie. The Male and Breed Championship was won by Anna Pennells Shearling Ram who went on to win the Reserve Native Interbreed on Day 2. The Female Championship and Reserve Breed Champion went to Andrew Fishers Shearling Ewe. With the Reserve Male Championship going to Merediths Family Pixie Bred Aged Ram and the Reserve Female Championship to Anna Pennells Aged Ewe.
RWAS Smallholders 2022
Clun's were well represented in Llanelwedd this May with longtime breeder Mike Eckley (Court-Llacca) and new breeder Gwawr Llewelyn Williams (Eryri) taking prizes in the AONB Section. Mike, won the Senior Ram class and the Reserve Championship with Pen-Y-Wern Blockbuster and also the Shearling ewe Class with Court-Llacca Edna. Whilst Gwawr took second in the Aged Ewe Class with a very smart ewe bred by Monty Davies and also second in the Shearling Ewe class with a homebred ewe.

North Somerset Agricultural Show 2022
It was a great start to the shows for 2022 with Claire Burrough exhibiting at North Somerset Agricultural show with Burroway Dragoness winning Aob Champion, Native Champion and Reserve Interbreed Sheep in show. Well done!
Masham Sheep Fair
The limited show season came to an end with Anna Pennell the Nipna Flock representing the Clun's in the unique Masham Sheep Fair. There were huge Classes but she managed to secure the Reserve Championship with Pixie Blackjack.
Ennerdale Show 2021
New breeder Paul Murray had a superb start to his career showing Clun's taking First Prizes with his shearling Ewe and Ewe Lamb and then the section Championship with the Shearling Ewe.
Staffordshire County Show 2021
Although there are very few shows this summer the Northern breeders continued to exhibit where possible. This time Andrew Fisher took his Clun's to Staffs and had another fantastic day taking 1st Prizes with his Senior Ram, Ram Lamb and Ewe Lamb and also 2nd with a Shearling Ewe. With the Senior Ram going on to take the AONB Championship.
Honiton Show 2021
The mother and daughter duo of Claire & Chloe Burrough stepped out for the first time this summer with a strong team at Honiton Show and despite terrible weather they managed to pick up 1st with their homebred 2 shear Ram (Consort) and Ram Lamb (Emrys) and 2nd and 3rd in both the the ewe and ewe lamb classes. Consort then went on to win the Reserve Section Championship.
Royal Lancashire Show 2021
Clun's dominated the Royal Lancashire Show recently with the Nidderdale Flock of Andrew Fisher entered in the AONB classes. They secured 1st Prize Ram , Ewe and Ewe Lamb; 2nd Prize Shearling Ewe; 3rd Prize Ram Lamb and Group of 3. He then won the section Championship with the ewe which then went on to win Reserve Interbreed Championship.
Derwent Flock Fly the Flag
The Derwent Flock of Sue Tyson and Rach Willan have made a great effort attending the few shows close to them this summer. In June they took their Clun's to Cumbria RBST show at Westmorland and were up against some strong Suffolk and Hampshire entries in the Shortwooled Section. Despite this they took a 1st in the Senior Ram Class with Derwent Diamond Geezer and 3rd with their ram lamb Derwent Enrique. They were out again at Gartang Show and in huge AONB classes of 20 plus they took 1st with Hunter Ariana in the Aged Ewe Class, 2nd with Derwent Dancing Queen in the shearling ewe and 4th with ram lamb , Derwent Enrique
Great Yorkshire Show 2021
For the first time since the 1970's Clun Forest Sheep were able to have their own breed classes thanks to the work of exhibitors in previous years turning out regularly in the Any Other sections. There were 5 exhibitors present with the judging overseen by Mr. R. Vincent.
Mr R. Vincent found his overall Breed Champion in Miss A Pennells' homebred Shearling ewe "Nipna Delight". Reserve Breed champion came from the same exhibitor in the Male Champion - "Charben Ben", the Nipna Flock's 3 shear stock ram bred by R. Vernon.
Reserve Female Champion came from the 2nd place in a very hotly contested Shearling ewe class "Court-llacca Diana" exhibited by M & T Eckley & Sons, Herefordshire. The same exhibitor also produced the Reserve Male Champion coming from the ram class "Pen-y-wern Blockbuster" bred by A.E. Williams.
The Clun Forest made a great impression in the following days' Interbreeds with "Nipna Delight" being pulled into the final 5 and then the Interbreed pair both from A. Pennell went one further to be pulled out as Reserve Interbreed Pair champions.

Countryside Live at Harrogate 2019
The final Show of the season was in October at the Countryside Live Show at Harrogate and the Clun’s smashed it with Andrew Fisher winning the Section Championship and the the Reserve Overall Sheep Championship with Trewyrlod 18.03404.
Newbury Show 2019
The fourth and final show that has specific Clun Forest Sheep classes was held in mid September at the Royal Berkshire Showground at Newbury, which again had strong classes Edna Spice taking the Championship with Fieldway Barnie. The female classes were both won by John Shepperson and his homebred ewe won the Female Championship. There was success for the Pixie flock as well who took the ram lamb class.
Clun's Clean Sweep at Felin Fach Show 2019
Cluns swept the board at Felin Fach Show in the shadow of the Black Mountains. The T.R.Eckley Cup for Best Clun Exhibit was won by Monty Davies, he also won 3 out of 4 Firsts in the AONB section. Then the AONB Championship with his Royal Welsh Champion, ‘Sarnesfield Alcamist’, and Reserve Championship with Aber-Rheon Shearling Ewe. He went on to win the Interbreed Pairs Championship, Lowland Breed Championship and the Supreme Interbreed Championship.
Court-Llacca on Top at Tenbury Wells 2019
Mike Eckley finished his show season winning the AONB section and the F.E.Beaufort Cup for Best Clun Exhibit at Tenbury Wells Show of over 60 entries, with his veteran 5 year old ram ‘Sarnesfield 14.01493’ aka Ivor the Engine. He also won the Shearling ewe class with his daughter Court-Llacca 18.03343. The tup then retired from the showing in style by then winning the Reserve Interbreed Section of a show with over 700 sheep entries.
Derwent Flock Finish Year on a High
Having had gradual success with their new Clun flock throughout the season the Derwent Flock hit top spot at the pretty Keswick Show and won the AONB Championship with their ram, ‘Baltazar’. During the year they also took prizes at Ripley, Dumfries, Penrith, Great Yorkshire and Cumberland Shows.
Changford Show 2019
Even though the Pixie Flock of Rex Vincent and Debs Searle has now relocated in Devon, they still flew the flag at Changford Show. Where their Shearling Ram won the Reserve AONB Championship.
Northern Clun Success at Rydale & Wensleydale Shows 2019
At Rydale Show in Anna Pennell won the A.O.N.B. Championship with Pixie bed Shearling Ram, ‘Blackjack’ and also took the Group Championship. Then at Wensleydale Show in the heart of Yorkshire, it was again Anna who was flying the flag with her Nipna Flock taking the Reserve Breed Championship with a Shearling ewe this time.
Devon Treble for Mother & Daughter
At Mid-Devon Show the Burroway Flock of Claire & Chloe Burrough continued their magnificent maiden season by winning the A.O.N.B. Section and then the Interbreed Supreme Championship with their outstanding Wrotham bred ewe, ‘Carrenna’. The same ewe won the A.O.N.B. Championship at Honiton Show.The Burrough family continued their success in to August winning the Female and Breed Champions Melpash Show in the south west proved to be a fitting finale to the Burroughs family debut season with their Clun’s and the went out with a bang winning the AONB Section and then the Interbreed Supreme Championship again with ‘Carrenna’.
Nidderdale Flock Fly the Flag
At Gargrave Show Andrew Fisher chalked up the AONB Championship with his Wollerton bred shearling ewe, bought from a previous society secretary, Sandra Edwards. Later in the season he did the same at Ripley Show and took the Reserve AONB Championship at Pateley Show. He also took rosettes with his Clun’s at Newark, Borobridge, Kilnsey and Masham Shows
Burwarton Show 2019
Burwarton in the heart of Shropshire was well supported in the Clun Classes with I.T.Davies following up their Three Counties Show success with 4 firsts including all the male classes and the breed championship with a Pen-y-Wern ram. But there was also success for Kira Newey, who won the Shearling Ewe class and the Group Championship, and the societies Chairwoman, Steph Thackery took First Prize in the ewe lamb class.
Honddu do well in Breconshire
At local villages shows in Breconshire I.T.Davies kept the flag flying with AONB Championship at Cwmdu, Lower Chapel and Llyswen with their homebred Shearling Ram.
High Entries and Hot Sunshine at the 100th Royal Welsh Show
It's Europe's biggest livestock and the Championship every shepherd coverts above all other. The competition was strong across all the Clun classes especially in the Female Section. The Aged Ram Class was between 2 rams which had made 500 gns at last years sale, with Monty Davies and Sarnesfield Alcamist just edging Del Knowles and Walton 02706 aka 'Evan' into second with Bex Meredith coming third with Sarnesfield Almighty, who is a full brother to Alcamist. In the Shearling Ram Class, Kibee Boris, followed up his RWAS Smallholders success and again took 1st for first time exhibitor at the Royal Welsh, Kira Newey. The Ram Lamb Class was taken by a lamb sire by Alacmist and out of a Pixie bred ewe also bought at the society sale last September. The Shearling Ewe Class was one of the strongest in recent years in terms of both quantity and quality and it was to be expert showman Del Knowles with Wrotham Excel who took top honours closely followed by Anna Pennell, who was exhibiting a ewe also bred by Del Knowles. The Ewe Lamb Class was no easier to judge for well known breeder, Mike Eckley, but it was to be the excellent Wrotham Francesca who took 1st and the class for the fourth year in a row for the Wrotham Flock. Next up was the Group Class in which 6 excellent groups forward, with the well matched Wrotham group which contained two 1st Prize winners and a 2nd taking top spot. Following the Group Class the sons of Edna Spice (Fieldway Flock) presented her with beautiful Silver Salver to mark her unwavering support of the Clun Breed since 1991...well done Edna, Alan & Phil. The W.P.Williams Cup for the Best Novice went to a smart shearling ewe exhibited by another new face, Andrew Fisher. There was a new award this year in the for of the W.H.Sinnett Perpetual Award for the Clun exhibitor under 25 years who gained the most points at the 2019 show. The inaugural winner was Monty Davies (Aber-Rheon Flock) with Kira Newey (Kibee Flock) a close second and Cameron Hendrie (Midlem Flock) 3rd. The Female Championship was dominated by Wrotham breed stock with Del Knowles 'Excel' taking it from Anna Pennells smart 2nd Prize shearling ewe. The Male Championship was won by Monty Davies and the excellent Sarnesfield Alcamist with Kira Newey's Kibee Boris just pipping Walton' Evan' for the reserve spot. The Breed Championship was another close affair but it was to be the Sarnesfield Aged Ram day with the Wrotham Ewe Reserve. The following day there was to be no repeat of last years Interbreed success, but Sarnesfield Alcamist was pulled out into the last 3 of the Native Interbeed Championship and Del Knowles well matched Ram and Ewe were a great advert in the Pairs Championship. A 'Great' Yorkshire Show 2019 for Clun's
It was another wonderful advert for the Clun Forest at this years Great Yorkshire with 3 of the 4 A.O.N.B. classes being won by Clun's. The dominance was lead by Del Knowles who took both the Male & Female Championship and subsequently the the Breed & Reserve Breed Championship. He was ably supported by Andrew Fisher, Jen Hunter and Messers Tyson & Willan, who all took home rosettes in exceptionally strong classes of uptown 15 exhibits, that included Oxfords, Dorsets, Southdowns & Shropshires.
Royal Norfolk Show 2019
Over the past couple of year the Clun's have been well represented at this prestigious show and had a fair share of success. 2019 was no exception with Andrew Fisher and Anna Pennell taking rosettes. It was Andrew and his shearling ram which took a red and followed on to with the Reserve Male Championship in the A.O.N.B. Section. He had a show to remember with his various Nidderdale Flocks also taking Champion Female and Breed Champion in the British White Cattle Section and also Champion Male and Breed Champion Kerry Hill. It was also a good show for Anna whose Nipna Wensleydale Flock out did the Clun's this time winning Champion Longwool Section & Overall Champion Fleece
Cheshire County Show 2019
Well done to Mandy Glover who took a very respectful 2nd Prize in the A.O.N.B. Section, narrowly missing out to a strong Kerry Ram which took the Section Championship.
Ballymena Show 2019
Edward Adamson went one better this week in Northern Ireland when his Aged ram took the Championship in the Rare Breed & Minority Section at Ballymena.
Derwent Flock Debut at Cumberland Show 2019
Another new flock made its Clun showing debut this weekend this time it was Sue Tyson and Rachel Willan and their Derwent Flock that entered the A.O.N.B. Section and came away with a respectable 3rd in both the Ram and Ewe Classes. Also showing was Jennifer Hunter who took several rosettes including 1st with a Shearling ram.
Royal Three Counties Show 2019
It was another wet show in June with rainclouds over the Malvern Hills, but there was a good turnout of Clun’s despite the weather. The 1st Prize Aged Ram bred by A.E.Williams and exhibited by I.T.Davies won the Breed & Male Championship and they also won the ram lamb class. With a homebred Shearling ram from Edna Spice taking 1st and Reserve Male Championship. The Spice family also won the Shearling ewe class and went on to win the Female Championship and Reserve Breed Championship. With Anna Pennell taking 1st in the Aged Ewe and Ewe Lamb Class with the latter taking the Reserve Female Championship.
South of England Success for Team Spice 2019
It may have been raining at the SoE show ground but the sun was shining on the Spice family of Edna, Alan & Phillip Spice as they walked away with the Hill & Heath Championship with their homebred shearling ram, Fieldway Bart. The classes were incredible strong with him topping a ram class of 13 entries, with another Fieldway ram 4th. Their ram lamb finished 5th out of 11 and their ewe lamb took 2nd in a class of 13. A great achievement from one of the veterans of the showring.

Interbreed success at Royal Bath & West Show 2019
Claire & Chloe Burrough went even better in the Any Other Native Hill & Upland Breed section at the Royal Bath and West. Winning 1st & 2nd Aged Ewe Class, 1st & 3rd Shearling Ewe Class and 1st & 3rd Ewe Lamb Classe, then taking the Female Championship and Reserve Championship, followed by the Breed Championship with their Aged Wrotham bred ewe. Next up was the Interbreed Championship for the Longwooled or Mountain Sheep Section which they took and finally being pulled out into the top 3 for the Supreme Champion Sheep at the 2019 Royal Bath & West. Then to end an already memorable show Chloe won the Senior Young handlers Competition for 18 - 21 year olds. Well done on an excellent show and great exposure of the breed.
Fisher's catch at Staffordshire County Show 2019
Yet another new flock, which was founded last autumn, has success at a county show this May. This time it was the the turn of experienced showman, Andrew Fisher and his Nidderdale Flock. He came away with 2nd Shearling Ram, 1st Shearling Ewe, 1st Aged Ewe, 2nd Ewe Lamb and also Reserve A.O.N.B. Champion with the ewe.
Clun's take reds at a wet Northumberland Show 2019
At a wet Northumberland County, Anna Pennell and her Nipna Flock returned to the showing after a fantastic 2018. She was not to be disappointed with first wins for both Wrotham Barbara in the Shearling Ewe Class and Nipna Cheryl the Ewe lamb Class. She also took 2nd Prize in a 16 strong Ram Lamb Class with 2nd Nipna Cedric . The Shearling ewe also went on to win Reserve Champion Any Other Native Breed to a strong Ryland aged ram . The Nipna Group of 3 also took the Reserve Championship in the section.
Old v New at the Shropshire County Show 2019
The Shropshire County Show was well represented by the native Clun's, with the UK's oldest Flock and youngest flock competing in the A.O.N.B. Section, against some strong Kerry Hill and Blue Faced Leicesters. The established Court-Llacca Flock of the Eckley Family won 1st & 4th in the Ram Class. It was the turn of first time exhibitor Ceri Thomas of Welshpool and her Y Gaer Flock, which was established this year with a ewe from the Wrotham Flock and 2 ewe lambs from the Travelly Flock. She was not to be disappointed as her homebred ram lamb took 1st Prize also. It was then the turn of Court-Llacca who won 1st and 4th in the Shearling Ewe Class. In the Championships Mike Eckley Sarnesfield 01493 won the Male and then Breed Championship, with his daughter Court-Llacca 03342 taking the Reserve Female Championship. The Court-Llacca group also took the Reserve Championship in the section.

Kira Newey took a full team of 4 Kibee Clun's to this years Spring Festival and came away with 6 rosettes which included Reserve Champion Group (all homebred), 1st Prize Shearling ram with Kibee Boris, 2nd Prize Aged Ram, 2nd Prize Aged Ewe & 4th Prize Shearling Ewe.
Delight at Devon County Show 2019
One of the societies newest flocks made their Clun showing debut at last weeks Devon County Show and came home with a host of rosettes. The newly formed Burroway Flock from Claire & Chloe Burrough, Axminster, Devon were entered in the AOV Continental & British Breed Classes and won 1st in the Ewe with lambs at foot class and 1st & 2nd in the Shearling ewe class. The Ewe (with lambs) then went on to win the Female Championship, with the shearling ewe standing Reserve, then Reserve Breed Championship to a Rouge Aged Ram, a fantastic achievement. The 3 ewes shown were bred by a veteran of the show ring Del Knowles (Wrotham Flock) and were all by his outstanding Show Champion Trewyrlod 01705 aka 'Rich'
SHOW SEASON 2019
As the show season kicks off in May 2019, exhibitors are reminded that the society provides 4 trophies that are competed for on a points system between May and September. They are the Vaughan Cup for the Ram of the Year, The Laidlaw Cup for the Female of the Year, The Palmer Cup for the Exhibitor gaining the most points in Clun classes. Points for these first 3 cups can be collected at Three Counties, Royal Welsh, Burwarton & Newbury Shows only. The final one is the Court-Llacca Cup for the exhibitor gaining the most points in the Any Other Breed Section (or like section) at any show in the UK. Exhibitors are asked to record their placings for collation at the end of the 2019 season.
Kington Show 2018
For many years Kington Show was the premier 1 day show for Clun Forest Sheep, deep in the heart of Herefordshire. The classes were lost in 2008, so it wonderful to see a new member of the society, Hannah Mason of Wigmore, flying the flag in the A.O.N.B. Section. She gained a 3rd in the Ewe Lamb Class at her first attempt there, against strong opposition....well done Hannah.
Pixie Flock top off Perfect Weekend at Newbury Show 2018
The Pixie Flock topped off a great weekend having secured the Clun Championship and top price, with a Shearling Ram and a breed record price for a Clun Female, at the Society Show & Sale in Ludlow on Friday. They traveled to Newbury Show on the Saturday and won the Clun Championship with their homebred ewe. The Reserve Championship went to Del Knowles and his Aged Ram, he also won the Ewe Lamb Class. With the Spice family winning the Ram Lamb Class.
Rare Breeds Survival Trust Show Northern Ireland at Gosford Forest Park
Well done to Louise Skelly and her daughter Esther and her husband Tim Smith for having a go at the recent RBST Show at Gosford Forest Park. They took their Clun Shearling Ram and got a very decent 3rd Prize in the A.O.N.B. Ram Any Age Class in their first attempt into the show ring, well done all.

The 94th Clun Forest Sheep Breeders Society Show & Sale took place in Ludlow on Friday 14th September 2018 with trade reflecting the current climate for breeding sheep sales. As ever, good quality stock was much in demand.
There were more Females sold this year (123 Pedigree Clun Forest Ewes), with overall clearance rate of 89%. Yearling Ewes were in greatest demand with 97% clearance. The top price saw an huge increase of 46% (£90) on 2017 for a Yearling Ewe from R Vincent & D Searle (Pixie Flock), which sold for a Breed Record for a Clun Shearling Ewe of £285 to Mr D Knowles (Wrotham Flock). All the 2-year-old females that were sold made £140 per head, resulting in a draw for Class 11 between GR Roberts (Furlongs) and W.G.Smith (Burrington)!

C Hendrie (Midlem) won the best ram lamb which sold for £262.50 to the Judge, N Faulkner (Cerney), however, the highest price Ram Lamb from IT Davies (Honddu Flock) sold for £367.50 to K Davies (Foxglove). There was a 25% increase in the average selling price of ram lambs to £140.

Bucks County Show 2018
It was a great end to August for the Clun breed and Del Knowles as he won the Interbreed Championship with Trewyrlod 15.01705 aka 'Rich'. They also won Reserve Interbreed Group of 3, the Champion and Reserve Champion in Native Breed Section along with Ram , Ewe and Ewe lamb Native Breeds Classes.
Felin Fach Show 2018
Monty Davies had an excellent Felin Fach Show winning the Champion and Reserve A.O.N.B. Championship, with a homebred shearling ewe and Sarnesield bred Aged Ram respectively. He then went on to win the Reserve Interbreed Pairs Championship with the same 2 sheep. Then to cap off an outstanding show he won the Interbreed Lowland Championship and then the Reserve Supreme Interbreed Championship with his shearling ewe against some exceptional sheep.

Edenbridge & Oxted Show 2018
The Wrotham Flock returned to the showing over the Bank Holiday weekend at Edenbridge & Oxted Show winning Champion Any Other Down breed classes with their Trewyrlod bred Aged Ram.
Llanigon Show
At the 58th Llanigon Show near Hay-on-Wye the Cluns had another good day with Mike, Evie & Tommy Eckley winning the Lowland Championship and then the Supreme Interbreed Championship.
Tenbury Wells Show 2018
At Tenbury Wells Show the Cluns were represented in the A.O.N.B. Section by Steph Thackery and her Hayton Flock. They took the F.E.Beaufort Perpetual Challenge Cup with a homebred Shearling Ewe.
Yealmpton Show 2018
A flock started last September following the autumn sales made a first venture into the the showing with Lucy Gilbard taking her Cluns to Yealmpton Show, Devon. They were rewarded by winning a 1st, 3rd & 4th before going on to be awarded the Reserve Breed Championship in the A.O.N.B Section
Nantwich Show
Mandy Glover and family was again representing the Cluns in the Northwest this time at Nantwich Show and she came home with two 3rds and three 4th prize rosettes in strong A.O.N.B. classes
Monmouthshire Show
Even the sheep needed to wear hats at Monmouthshire show to keep cool, with the Meredith Family taking 2nd in the Shearling ram and shearling ewe classes in the A.O.N.B. Section
Brecon Show 2018
At Britain's oldest agricultural show it was the Cluns from I.T.Davies & Son that took home the top honours in the A.ON.B. Section with a 2 year ram taking the Championship and a shearling ewe lying Reserve.
Burwarton Show 2018
It was great to see 7 exhibitors at this years Burwarton Show with Hannah Mason, Chris Evans and Kira Newey making their first appearance in the showring with their cluns. It was I.T.Davies that took the Championship with an Aged Ram and also won the Ram Lamb, Ewe Lamb and Group Cards. With Reserve going to C. & A.Meredith and their Shearling Ewe, they also won the shearling ram class. The Aged Ewe class went to Kira Newey and the Honddu Group went on to be placed Reserve in the Interbreed.
Royal Welsh Show 2018
At a dull and drizzily Day 2 of the Royal Welsh Showground the sun shone on ‘Sharon’ the shearling ewe owned and exhibited by Anna Pennell in her maiden visit to Llanelwedd. Having won the strongest class on the day, she went on to win the Female and then the Breed Championship to cap a fantastic show. She was hard pushed by Monty Davies’ shearling ewe who stood a close 2nd in the class and Reserve Female Champion. The Reserve Breed and Male Champion was an aged ram from I.T.Davies bred by A.E.Williams, they also won the ram lamb class. The Reserve Male champion was the 1st Prize Shearling ram from C.Meredith. The Ewe Lamb Class was won by Del Knowles. Monty Davies took the Group Championship with a very well matched Aged Ram, Shearling Ewe & Ewe Lamb. The W.P.Williams Cup for Best Novice was won by B. & D.Roberts and their 2nd Prize Shearling Ram. However, Day 3 of the show will forever be etched in the annuals of the societies history. When Anna Pennell, firstly, emulated her Great Yorkshire Show achievement by winning the Native Lowland Interbreed Championship and then went one better by winning the Champion of Champions Award live on TV. Huge congratulations to Del Knowles for breeding her and Anna for realising her potential and bringing her out to such a high standard. Finally on Day 4 the Clun's were at it again with Anna's ewe and Monty Davies' Sarnesfield bred Aged Ram forming a formidable Pairs combination, which culminated it them being awarded the Reserve Interbreed Pairs Championship. The final class at the show was the Supreme Group of Three Championship and the Aber-Rheon Group from Monty and his sisters did not disappoint, with a top 6 finish out of 44 breeds forward. What an outstanding Royal Welsh for the Clun Forest Sheep and it's members.

Cluns dominate 160th Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate
The Clun Forest Breed made at big impression at this years GYS. On Day One Anna Pennell won the Female and Breed Section Championship for the Any Other Down Breed with her Wrotham bred Shearling Ewe. She beat close friend, Del Knowles and his 3 year old ram, who took the Reserve Any Other Breed Champinship having already secured the Male Championship. On Day 2 Anna then won the Shortwool Interbreed and to cap off a remarkable show finished Reserve Supreme Sheep of the Great Yorkshire Show. Well done to both what a great advert for the breed.
Kent County Show
Del Knowles and his Cluns claimed another County Show Crown in the 'Garden of England' by taking the British Down Breed Championship at Kent County Show with his 3 year old stock ram Trewyrlod 15.01705 aka 'Rich'.

Sun Shines on Cluns at Royal Norfolk Show
At a sun kissed Norfolk Showground the Cluns came out on top with Del Knowles taking the A.O.N.B. Championship with his 3 year old Ram, and a Wrotham bred Shearling Ewe from Anna Pennell taking the Reserve A.O.N.B. Championship in strong classes. There was to be further success on day 2 of the show when Knowles & Pennell teamed up for the Inter-breed Pairs Championship and came in Reserve Pairs Champions. Well done to you both.
Family do battle at Berkeley Castle Show
The Vincent & Searle Partnership were competing against each other at the recent show held in the Castle Meadows at Berkeley. Daughter Mae with her Oxfords and Mum Debs with her Pixie Cluns. The Cluns held their own with 2nd in both the Ewe and Ewe Lamb Class in the A.O.N.B. Section. Well done Rex, Debs & Family.
Maddavenny Flock at the Cheshire County Show
Messers Crawford & Glover and their Maddavenny Flock had a successful day at the Cheshire County Show in the AONB Section, taking home a 4th in the Shearling Ram Class, 2nd in the Ram Lamb class and 2nd in the Ewe lamb Class. They also did some great Breed Promotion...well done all!
Royal Three Counties Show 2018
Veteran Clun showman Clive Meredith took the top honours at this years Three Counties Show with a Shearling Ram he purchased at the 2017 Royal Welsh Show from Edna Spice. Fieldway Arthur won several firsts as a lamb, but in his first outing as a shearling took First, Male and then Supreme Breed Champion for Clive and his daughter Bex. The Spice family were also celebrating two first themselves with the Ram Lamb Class and Aged Ewe Class, the ram lamb going on to win the Reserve Male Championship. The Female championship was won by a Shearling Ewe from I.T.Davies & Son, won also won the Senior Ram Class, with Reserve Female Championship going to Del Knowles and his First Prize Ewe Lamb. Clun on Top at North Yorkshire County Show
Anna Pennell was again successful in the A.O.N.B. section of a county show, by winning the Championship at the North Yorkshire County Show with her Wrotham bred Clun Shearling Ewe. She also took Wensleydale Breed Champion and then over Reserve Supreme interbreed with her hogg at the same show.
Spice Family fly the flag at Royal Bath & West Show
Edna Spice and her two sons Alan and Philip were the only Clun entries at this years Royal Bath & West Show, so unfortunately the Clun classes were lost and they moved into the Any Other Native Shortwool Section. They were however rewarded for their efforts with a number of rosettes, but were especially successful in the female section taking 1st with their ewe lamb and Reserve Female Champion with their homebred Shearling ewe.
Clun success for new breeder in Northumberland County Show
One of the CFSBS newest members, Anna Pennell, was celebrating last night as she carried away the A.O.N.B. Championship at the Northumberland County Show with the first outing of her Wrotham bred Shearling Ewe. She initially won a large ewe class before securing the Championship. Good luck with the rest of the summer Anna and thank you for flying the flag..
Cluns back the Shropshire County Show for the first time in 28 years
The Shropshire County Show which held Clun classes from 1927 to 1990 welcomed back the first Clun entries since the loss of classes, when Mike & Tommy Eckley entered the A.O.N.B Section and dominated the day winning Male & Female Championship and then the Breed Championship with a Sarnesfield bred ram in what was Tommy's first officially show outing.....well done young man.
Wrotham Flock repeat Notts County Show success in 2018
Del Knowles started where he left off last year by winning Championships. He continued his success by winning the A.O.N.B. Championship with his Trewyrlod bred ram and then went one better to win the reserve Interbreed Championship with the same ram. Well done to team Wrotham and get well soon Del, who was taken ill at the end of the weekend.

Scottish Smallholders Show 2017
Newcomer to Cluns and the showing Mary Parry celebrated the end of an excellent first season with a 1st Hill Heath and Upland Shearling or older ewe class , Champion Hill, Heath and Upland, and then to top it off won Interbreed at her first attempt with her Honddu bred shearling ewe.
Newbury Show 2017
This years Newbury Show again attracted strong Clun entries with some excellent sheep on show at the last big show of the season with 2 partnerships Knowles & Brown and Searle & Vincent sharing the 4 Red Rosettes and 2 Cups on offer. Del & Daryl won the Ram, Ewe lamb and the Phillip Simmons Cup for Best Exhibit; with Rex & Debs winning the Ram Lamb, Ewe and The Lord Porchester Cup for the Best Ewe.
C.F.S.B.S. Show & Sale 2017
The 93rd Clun Forest Sheep Breeders Society Show & Sale took place in Ludlow with a good trade for ewes but rams were harder to sell with prices back on last year. It was great to see breeders from all patrs of the UK, Ireland and Europe in attendance.
The 94 Females on offer saw 100% clearance with a top price of 255 gns for a shearling ewe , which went to Scotland for the second year in a row to Mary Parry of Lockerbie.
The Champion Pen of 10 Two Shear Ewes once again went to veteran Clun Breeder Gordon Roberts and were later sold for 170 gns to a new breeder of J.Stuckey, Totnes, Devon. However, the top priced pen of 10 ewes went to Gordon Roberts second pen, these ewes sold for 178 gns to a regular buyer in recent years, Gary Phillips, Carmarthen.
In the Male Section there was a very selective trade on rams with an average of £239.67 for Shearling Rams. The top price of the day was for the Champion, a Foxglove bred ram from I.T.Davies, who was sold for 730 gns to keen showman Cameron Hendrie of Talgarth. The winner of the A.E.Williams Salver for the Best Average of 3 rams went to Mark Lloyd, Sarnesfield who had run of 8 strong rams, which really stood out with a top 3 average of £566.66. The Reserve Champion Male from Richard Price's Trewyrlod was sold for £420 to a long established unregistered breeder, Margaret Deakins of Craven Arms.
In the Ram Lamb Class was also won by I.T.Davies and was bought by Del Knowles of St Albans for 170 gns to go to his successful Wrotham Flock. It was great to see young Kira Newey follow up on her 'Clun Funday' success with her first red rosette at the society sale in the Aged Ram class with a Greenway bred ram and was bought for 190 gns by Harold Marsh, who runs one the the UK's oldest Flocks at Stokesay, Craven Arms.

Cluns dominate A.O.N.B. Section at Felin Fach Show 2017
Two young Clun breeders dominated the Any Other native Breed Section at a sunbaked Felin Fach Show on Bank Holiday Monday, winning 3 of the 4 classes against Suffolks, Llanwenogs and Poll Dorsets Monday. Monty Davies (Aber-Rheon Flock) took the Ram Any Age Class with a very smart 2 shear ram, with Cameron Hendrie (Midlam Flock) taking the ewe and ewe lamb class with 2 equally smart sheep. Monty went on to win the AONB Championship with Cameron a close reserve with the ewe. Monty also recieved the T.R.Eckley Memorial Cup from Robert Eckley formerly of Court-Llacca.
Burwarton Show 2017
Clun Flocks from Oxfordshire, Powys, Wiltshire and Worcestershire attended one of the Uk biggest one day shows at Burwarton last week to do battle. There were 7 red rosettes up for grabs with I.T.Davies & Son winning the Shearling ram class, Aged ewe class and both lamb classes. There was a welcome first appearance in the Clun lines this year from Debs Searle and Rex Vincent and they duly won the Aged Ram class. The Wrotham Flock of Messers Knowles & Brown took the final 2 reds in the Shearling ewe class and the Champion Group Class. The Championship was won by Mr.Davies's Foxglove bred Shearling ram and Messers Searle & Vincent took the reserve with their Sarnesfield bred Aged Ram. There was to be further success in the ewe lamb Interbreed for the Honddu Flock as they won against strong opposition. ROYAL WELSH SHOW 2017
The Royal Welsh Show this week saw 8 exhibitors from all over the UK compete for the most prestigious championship in the show season. The judge for this year show was Nigel Faulkner of the Cerney Flock and was more than up to the task. In the ram class he gave the red to Mike Eckleys powerful three year old ram Sarnesfield 14.01493 aka Ivor the Engine and the blue rosette went to Messers Del Knowles & Daryl Brown's Trewyrlod 15.01705, who has been so successful during the 2017 season. In the shearling ram class Edna, Alan & Phil Spice took honours with a smart tup, Fieldway 16.0232, with the youngest exhibitor, Monty Davies being placed 2nd with a very sharp shearling Aber-Rheon 16.00005. The final male class saw Monty go one better and take first prize with a very 'showy' March born lamb Aber-Rheon 17.00006 and 2nd went to Fieldway 17.00273, who was subsequent sold after the show to a fellow exhibitor.
A strong shearling ewe class left the judge quite literally scratching his head with very little separating the top 3, but it was to be the Spice family who did the double in the shearling class with a very smart homebred ewe Fieldway 16.00259, coming a very close 2nd was Bex Meredith and a strong Menutton bred ewe. It was a welcome return to the Clun classes for the Meredith family who have won the Royal Welsh Championship 4 times previously. The ewe lamb class went to a lengthy and smart ewe lamb from Del and Daryl, Wrotham 17.01837, with the Spice family notching up another 2nd with Fieldway 17.00306. Cluns at Nantwich Show 2017
Mandy Glover took sheep from her Maddaveny Flock in Cheshire to her local show at Nantwich. She was placed in all the classes entered and came away with a 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th. Well done Mandy!
Cluns in the Irish show ring for first time in 20 years
It has been 20 years sine Northern Irish Clun breeder, Edward Adamson, has shown Cluns. The well known N.Ireland Regional NSA Development Manager who also keeps Ile de France, Lleyns and Easycare took his two imported Honddu ram lambs and finished 1st & 2nd in the Traditional, Native & Rare Breed class at Antrim Show. He was up against Southdown, Leicester Longwool & Valais Blacknose but also managed to get Reserve Champion and created a lot of interest in our wonderful breed. Well done Edward...keep flying the flag!
Cluns back at the Great Yorkshire Show
It has been over 40 years since there have been Clun classes at the GYS, but that didn't deter Brian & Jen Hunter to enter their show team at this years show and what a show they had competing in the Hill, Heath and Upland Section against Kerries, Devon Closewools, Border Leicesters, Speckled Faced and Portlands. They took 1st in Aged ram class with Trewyrlod 14.07550, 4th in the ram lamb class, 5th in the combined ewe class and 2nd in the ewe lamb class. Trewyrlod 14.07550 then went on to win the Male & Breed Championship. The next day their shearling ewe won the Medium wool section for Wool on the Hoof and came 4th in the Overall Wool on the Hoof Championship.
Kent County Show
The Wrotham Flock had another fantastic show this week and came away with Champion British Down, Reserve Champion Any Other Pure Breed of Native Origin, 5 Firsts and 4 Seconds. The Champion ram was yet again Trewyrlod 15.01750
Royal Norfolk Show
Messers Knowles and Brown once again did the breed proud at a soggy Royal Norfolk Show taking the Any Other Breed Championship against various breeds including Dorsets,Ryelands and Shropshires. It was their 2 year old Trewyrlod 15.01705 - 'Rich' that secured the Championship and on day 2 of the show did one better with their Shearling ewe to win the Pairs Inter-breed Championship beating off the Blue Texels and Teeswater.
Spice Family's South of England Show Success
Edna Spice and her sons Alan and Philip had an enjoyable time at the South of England Show this week being placed in all 4 Any Other Breed classes entered by the Fieldway Flock. In some large classes that included Kerry Hills, Cheviots, Black Welsh Mountain, Jacobs and Herdwicks they acquitted themselves well. They started proceedings but taking a 2nd and 4th in the Ram Class and then going one better in the Ram Lamb Class taking home the red rosette. This was followed by 4ths in both the Shearling Ewe and Ewe Lamb Classes. It was a great achievement for the Spice's who have shown their Cluns regularly for the past 25 years.

Cluns lead the way at Hertfordshire County Show
Hot on the heels of their success at Notts last week the Wrotham Flock did one better at Herts Show and won the Any Other Native Breed Championship with a 2 Shear Clun Ram bred by R.Price, Trewyrlod. They also took 1st and 2nd in the Shearling Ewe Class and were placed 5th in the Ram Lamb Class and 3rd in the Ewe lamb class in very strong classes that contained over 10 other breeds.
On the Sunday the team were out again at the show this time in the Longwool, Down & Shortwool Breeds Open Classes and were to be judged by a familiar face to Clun and Oxford Breeders, Rex Vincent. It was to be another successful day against strong opposition with the Ram winning his class then taking the Shortwool Championship and the Reserve Longwool, Down & Shortwool Breeds Championship. They also got a 5th with the Shearling Ewe and a 3rd with the Ewe Lamb. Again well done guys.

Wrotham Flock success at Notts County Show
Congratulations to Del and Daryl on their success at Notts Show in the Any Other Native Breed Class. They won the Shearling Ewe Class of 18 entries (including Southdowns, Oxfords, Suffolks , Wensleydales) with a homebred Clun Ewe and then the Reserve Female Championship. The also came 4th with their Clun Shearling Ram in a class of 12. Well done guys.
Clun Forest Sheep Classes reinstated at the Royal Bath & West for 2017
It is with great pleasure that we can announce that the Royal Bath & West Show at Shepton Mallett will have dedicated Clun Classes at next years show, which will be held from 31st May to 3rd June 2017. Thanks must be paid to Mary Parry of Lockerbie, Scotland who has led a campaign. We now need to ensure that the classes are supported with at least 3 exhibitors in each class.
Clun classes began in 1936 when T.E.Gwillim, Ffostill Flock, Talgarth won the Breed Championship with Bedstone Kingfisher (Pictured below left). Also exhibiting at that first show was E.A.L.Rossiter, Glen Flock, Hereford; H.J.Marsh, Bedstone Flock, Shropshire; and T.R.Eckley, Court-Llacca Flock, Brecon.

Sarnesfield Ram wins Championship at Ram Friday 7th October 2016, Ludlow Market

92nd CFSBS SHOW & SALE September 9th 2016
The 92nd Clun Forest Sheep Breeders Society Show & Sale took place in Ludlow with a firm trade for both ewes and rams, with buyers from as far as the Ilse of Skye.
The 123 Females on offer saw 100% clearance with a top price of £300.00 for a ewe lamb, which also went to Scotland to new breeder Mary Parry of Lockerbie.
The Champion Pen of 10 Two Shear Ewes went to veteran Clun Breeder Gordon Roberts and were later sold for £172.00 to another familiar name to Clun breeders of J.Hamer, Bicton. However the top priced pen of 10 ewes went to W.G.Smith, Burrington. These ewes sold for £182 to yet another new breeder, J.Tamplin of Caerphilly, Wales.
In the Male Section there was a steady trade on rams with 84% clearance and an average of £264 for Shearling Rams. The top price of the day was for a very strong Walton ram from Evan Jones, Presteigne who was sold for £640.50 to John Shepperson from Wiltshire. The winner of the A.E.Williams Salver for the Best Average of 3 rams went to renowned breeder Richard Price with an average of £486.50. The Champion Male from I.T.Davies sold to D.Jones, Brecon for £535.
In the Ram Lamb Class young Cameron Hendrie followed up his success in the Royal Welsh Show with his lamb winning the class and the Reserve Male Championship. The lamb was also bought by Mr. Tamplin for £367.50 and will surely produce some quality Cluns in the Gwent valley.

ROYAL WELSH 2016
In 2007 there was just 1 exhibitor at Britains biggest and best agricultural show and in 2013 the Royal Welsh Show said they were dropping the classes. That disaster was averted after a eleventh hour letter was sent by our then secretary, Sandra Williams, gave us one last chance and in 2016 there were 8 exhibitors and strong competition for all the rosettes on offer. In baking temperatures the judge, Evan Jones, was more than up for the task and awarded the Senior Ram class to veteran exhibitor Mike Eckley with his Sarnesfield bred ram 01.1493, he was pushed close by another Sarnesfield ram from Del Knowles. In the Shearling Ram Class the Honddu flock took honours with their homebred shearling which had also won the Three Counties, with Edna & Alan Spice second. In the Ram Lamb Class young Cameron Hendrie was over the moon to take home the first with a smart lamb. The shearling ewe class was by far the strongest with 9 excellent ewes forward. However, there was it was a Wrotham ewe that was to triumph and Wrotham was again on top in the Ewe Lamb class.
The Wrotham day was not over yet as the took the Group Championship in style. They then went on to win the Female Championship and the Reserve Male Championship. However, the top award of the day went to Mike Eckley's outstanding 2 year old ram which took the Male and Breed Championship for the Court-Llacca Flock in the 80th year exhibiting at the Royal Welsh and a third covered Royal Welsh Championship in a row. As in the Three Counties there was to be success in the Inter-Breed as this ram did something no other Clun has done and was placed Reserve Native Lowland Champion to John Sinnett's Suffolk. In the Novice Class 12 year old Monty Davies, who took 4th prize in the Shearling Ewe Class with his homebred ewe - Alice, won the W.I.Owens Cup, beating the Spice family and the Hunters from Scotland.

Royal Three Counties Show 2016
The Three Counties Show in mid- June saw the first Clun only classes of the summer and a pleasing entry with 6 exhibitors and 32 animals forward. However, the Honddu flock dominated the day with 5 firsts and 2 Championships. The only other red card winner was Rex Vincent with his powerful 2 year old ram, Sarnesfield 01495, which took the Aged Ram Class and the Reserve Male Championship. The Male Championship went to a Honddu 15.265 and the Female Championship went to a Honddu 15.221. In the Shearling ewe and Aged Ram Class class, Del and Daryl from the Wrotham Flock took a very close second on both occasions. There was to be further success for the Clun Breed as the Breed Champion (Shearling Ewe) went on to win the 'Non-Terminal Sire' Interbreed Championship the following day. Congratulations to all the exhibitors who made the effort and turned out their sheep so well including Cameron Hendrie, John Shepperson and the Hunters from Scotland .

C.F.S.B.S SHOW & SALE 2015 REPORT
After a very successful sale last year, the 2015 saw trade back and as always good sheep found a new home easily but the second class rams struggled to make decent prices. A trend which mirrored the poor lamb trade this autumn. However there was a clearance of 90% of rams forward. It was also pleasing to see new breeders offering stock from sale. These included James Thompson (Ranby Hill), Sue Scrivens (Greenway), Kira Newey (Kibee), Gary Phillips (Meadowlands) and Jen Hunter (Halleaths)
The top price of the day peaking at £535.50 for a shearling ram from R.Price, Trewyrlod Flock, Powys, who was second in his class. The ram,Trewyrlod 805, was an excellent breeders ram and certainly had show potential and was purchased by a new breeders Jen & Brian Hunter from Lockerbie, Scotland for her Halleaths Flock.
The rams were judged by Mr. Nigel Williams from Craven Arms, who gave the Overall Championship to a Shearling ram from I.T.Davies and sold for 420 gns to D.Neal
In the female section the trade was also back from last year with a top price paid for a pair of shearling ewes, that included the 1st Prize Single ewe from I.T.Davies, Brecon. They went for £255 each and found a home with face familiar at the summer shows, Del Knowles from the Wrotham Flock, Kent.
Judging the females was Evan Jones, Walton, Powys. He gave the Champion Pen of 10 to regular winner Gordon Roberts of the Furlongs Flock

This years Royal Welsh Show saw 32 exhibits from 7 exhibitors which was a great effort from all those involved. The Breed Championship went to Mike & Evie Eckley for the second time in succession and was the 12th time the Court-Llacca Flock has won the Royal Welsh Championship.
